About The Headline Update

The Headline Update is an independent Indian news website with one simple rule: every story shows you who reported it, and links you to the original. We started it because finding true news in India had become harder than finding news.

Contribute a storyMeet the team

Why we started

Most Indians now meet the news as forwards, short videos and screenshots of headlines with the source cut off. The same claim can reach a family group in Patna and a housing-society chat in Pune within minutes, long before anyone asks who reported it first.

We built The Headline Update to put that question back at the top of every story. When a report appears here, you can see the publisher that broke it, when they published it, and how many other independent outlets are reporting the same thing. Then you can read the original yourself.

Next to the day’s news, our explainer desk writes plain-language guides on how India works — elections, the RBI, UPI, the monsoon, the RTI Act — because understanding the system is the best protection against being misled about it.

How a story reaches you

  1. We follow trusted publishers. Our news engine tracks established Indian and international outlets through news APIs and their own RSS feeds, several times a day.
  2. We sort and tag. Each story is filed under a section and tagged with the topics and the states it mentions, so it reaches the right page.
  3. We show the coverage. When several outlets report the same event, we group them and show the count, so you can tell a widely reported fact from a single claim.
  4. We keep it current. News leaves the site after 30 days. Explainers stay, and are updated when the facts change. Errors are corrected in public.

What we promise readers

Read our editorial policy

The source on every story

Each report names its original publisher and links to it. If we cannot say where a story came from, we do not run it.

Corrections in public

When we get something wrong, we fix it and add a dated note saying what changed. Every correction request is reviewed within 48 hours.

No paid news

Advertising is always labelled. Sponsors never decide what we cover, and paid content never appears dressed as a news story.

Every state counts

All 28 states and 8 union territories have their own page, so Agartala gets the same shelf space as Delhi.

Plain language

We write for readers, not insiders. If a term needs explaining, we explain it, or link to an explainer that does.

Your data stays yours

No advertising trackers and no selling of data. Details you send us are used only to reply to you.
